This week at Sentence Center,
students persuaded us to be hungry and thoughtful with their opinions on various foodstuffs and methods of learning. We discussed the importance of strong descriptions, using advanced adjectives and concrete details. These tools show how it’s easier to convince your reader that you’re right when specific details infuse your paragraphs.

Some highlights from recent student writing:
I have buckets of toy cars from the Pixar Cars movies. My parents have bought me different characters from each movie, which I still find joy in playing with. If you ask my little 3-year-old brother, he will enthusiastically tell you that I still treasure my little Hot Rod and Doc Hudson. During my nap times as a younger child, I would often be too distracted playing Cars to fall asleep.

Do your expectations ever not match reality? When I was younger, all I wished for was a phone. I was so jealous of all the kids who got to have free, unfettered access to the internet, to watch videos and send photos whenever they wanted. As I got older, I realized that social media can have its downside, especially on kids and teenagers.

When Kareem left for Egypt this summer, we were able to chat using Discord and other apps. Thankfully, Discord still works in Egypt, and although the time difference, we were able to play together on call. Because of Discord, I was able to chat and ask Kareem about his life in Egypt. He would often tell me about how fun his school was. He got to go on field trips to the Mediterranean and also had a lot of friends there. Discord has helped me reach out to friends even if they were in different places.
